From arch-viz to visual effects, Mark Ramshaw meets the studios that made their mark on the CG industry in the last year. This week, PlusOne…

Striking out on the freelance road after graduating, PlusOne’s four partners found themselves teaming up so often that sharing a studio space made perfect sense. Fast forward another three years, and in 2009 they finally decided to make it official. Now, with an additional three motion designers and several freelancers offering mainly character design and animation support, PlusOne has become renowned for its hybrid animation/live action/digital media content projects.

“Most of our clients commission us for our creative approach of storytelling,” says PlusOne creative director Martijn Hogenkamp. “Though we have a lot of 3D power in-house, technique is never our main focus, and contrary to a lot of studios, we’ve never aimed for a specific style. For us the concept is just the starting point. We’re just as likely to work with 2D animation as live-action footage, though generally we end up combining techniques.”

The project that brought the studio to a global audience was actually its first. Created to celebrate Amsterdam’s Nieuw-West urban development, Amsterdam Osdorp ultimately ended up with screenings at several festivals and a nomination in the 2011 Architectural 3D Awards.

“It really gave us an opportunity to show what we’re capable of, and the exposure opened a lot of doors for us,” says managing director Marcel Vrieswijk.

Since then the studio has worked on several key projects, including ads for Volvo and Lotto, and short films for TEDxAmsterdam and The Amsterdam Museum. “Creatively, we’ve had a fantastic year, especially with the museum project, which was our biggest so far,” says Hogenkamp.

“We’ve also just completed an enormously challenging production for Proctor & Gamble, which is due to air soon. Our aim next is to push the boundaries further, tell bigger stories, and finish our showreel!”
